Citizen - 'Cement' SINGLE REVIEW

Returning in what feels like no time at all after 2013's debut album Youth, Citizen seem to have completely dropped the pop punk they started with on EP Young States and matured for their second full-length. At least that's what 'Cement' wants you to believe; the first track from the upcoming second album Everybody Is Going To Heaven. It's quick to let you know they now use the energy once spent on springy sadness to instead stir up something way more insidious.

The early comparisons to Brand New's most recent albums The Devil and God.. and Daisy are obvious but justified almost immediately with an intro of cold bass seeped in anxiety and dread.

Matt Kerekes vocals, albeit the chorus are low and moody and yeah, he does sound a bit like Jesse Lacey at times, but it's just so forgivable here and the chorus fits right in with Youth's big sing-alongs.

The track doesn't quite bellow so much as bear down from the top of the cellar stairs threatening to lock you up forever, all the while trying to convince you it loves you (Cement full of our teeth/ I'll give you myself any day).

The guitars are just so pent up here, and when they are given enough room they splutter and malfunction with every intention to scar.
