MØ live @ The Cockpit, Leeds 7th March 2014

There's just a weekend inbetween the release of her new album and Leeds can't hold back its excitement. Or its tight, plaited ponytails.

At the time of posting this, it's the Monday after and MØ's much anticipated first album 'No Mythologies To Follow' is officially out there, slinking around as everyones favourite new record of the week. Friday was the fevered panic before the rumoured storm. We had an idea what was coming, but we didn't know it'd be such a ride.

Slapping the electro pop tag on MØ and leaving it at that does nothing for the live show she brings with her. It gives it a dated, lifeless feel that says nothing about what this girl has stirring in her soul.

Fierce energy drips and darts from every snaking manoeuvre and some frankly unreal dance moves are shaken out with a cool ease. MØ is a dominator, commanding our will and we're happily submissive. Her tight ponytail is used like Wonder Woman's whip; seriously, I never thought I could be entertained by a ponytail for over an hour, but it's good to learn something new about yourself.

Oh what a world I was born into/ warriors are lying down  she declares as 'Pilgrim' blots the crowd with electronic raindrops, before the oncoming brass gives her the rush to ask Why do you and I live on and on? I don't think the young crowd has much of an answer for such a daunting question on a Friday night, so they just go ahead and dance to it.

Infinitely lighter of heart is the girl-power driven 'I Don't Wanna Dance'. This might not have the iron fortitude that 'XXX 88' puts up earlier in the night but the baying pile of flailing plaits in front of me were telling a different story and that was the opinion that mattered.

'Never Wanna Know' drops the lairy for lofty, while 'Glass' sounds like a pianist being thrown through a school window while the 'back seaters' give a few drum machines a kicking. MØ's live vocals give the previously angelic chorus of the recording a bumrush into a chain link fence and make it a personal favourite of the night. (video below).

The  early devotees and the casual observers are swiftly unified. As she yells I am a Maiden! with the fury of any indie Goddess that has gone before, The Cockpit forgets all about the Aluna's and Grimes' outside these walls. They're out of the window, for tonight at least as MØ refuses to end the night with any less than our devotion.
