Comity- 'The Journey Is Over Now' review

'The Journey Is Over Now' is one that I've been on-and-off attempting to review most of January. It's a brain-freezing concept album made up of four 'Parts' that stretch over a mighty 51 minutes. You will find it possibly overbearing and certainly intense; unstable but ultimately captivating.

Part I and Part II are a ten-ton slab of relentless riffs and punishing vocals. Collectively they make for a rolling barrage of calamity, instantly reminiscent of The Fall Of Troy, if TFOT were irrationally thrashy Frenchmen with even itchier trigger fingers.

Early on in Part I is a moment of Southern-slugging spliced up with a big mathy kitchen knife, like Every Time I Die soundtracking a heart attack.

Part II does bring a way doomier side; a much thicker offering helped along by a soaring rhythm. It's a tough cookie to digest on a first go but as with the best prog bands, they offer such a rich and layered sound that you just know it'll warp your mind live.

As a whole it's all-consuming, and it's heavy in more ways than just it's thundering instrumentals. Look at the cover art. Your first impression of it might be that it's an attempt at an arty and serious cover, without any real depth. OK, now go away, and listen to this in full. Can you see the depth now? If you come out the other end not feeling like one of those poor sailors about to have their heads taken off by that wave then you've probably been raised by Vikings and slept in blizzards since birth. If you're not a blizzard-resistant Viking lad or lass, then this is not light on the senses. It's just so damn rewarding though.

It's a record to be treat as a whole so if you're after a quick rock fix on your mp3 player of choice, this might not be the one. I want to make it clear that I think Comity are pretty damn great and would recommend 'The Journey is Over' to anyone who's a fan of challenging metal and rock music.. but if you're not in the mood to be taken on this journey, it'll crush your spirit and sink you into a watery grave. Enjoy!

Head over to Enjoyment Records big cartel to grab a copy of 'The Journey Is Over Now'. It's presented fantastically with two 12" vinyls, a CD version and of course the great artwork. Limited to 500 copies!
